The Historical Background of Flight

 

Flying has always been a fantasy for human beings. In Greek mythology, Daedalus and his son Icarus were the first people to attempt flight Daedalus was a craftsman working in the palace of King Minos. Daedalus was asked by King Minos to make a cell to contain the monster Minotaur. Instead, he builds a labyrinth. The existence of the minotaur was a secret and therefore the King ordered Daedalus and his son to be jailed to maintain the secret.

 

As they were on Crete island, Daedalus hatched a plan to make wings to make wings for his son and him so they can fly out of Crete. Daedalus gathered feathers from birds and made wings with wax. He made two pairs when the moment of escape arrived,  Daedalus warned his son Icarus not to fly too near the sun so that the wax does not melt. Sadly Icarus did not follow his father’s warning and he fell
