The Evolution of the Aircraft Engine

After the first world war, for most fighters and bombers engines of at least 1000hp were specified in the procurements of the mid-1930s. By mid-1938 1nd 1939, 2000hp engines were specified. Engines became more sophisticated as greater power was sought. the engines used in early world war2 had up to two stages of supercharging.. which led to lower engine life. This process of evolution of the aircraft engine has been difficult.

Pratt & Whitney R-1830

Production of this engine started in 1932. produced by Pratt& Whitney, the twin wasp was a 14-cylinder double-row air-cooled engine. It had a range of 800hp-1350hp. the design features included increased fuel efficiency and automatic mixture control. It was used in aircraft like the DC3, Grumman F4F, and B-24 Liberator among others. This engine has played its part in this evolution of the aircraft engine
