5. Boeing 727

The Boeing 727 is a three-engine aircraft. Total deliveries to date are 1832. It was designed as a follow-up on the B707 from where it borrowed some of its design. It had a passenger capacity of 106 passengers. The first flight of the B727 was done in 1963. This was the B727-100. The 727-200 flew for the first time in 1967.

This aircraft proved to be a workhorse for several years until new technology threatened its dominancy. New bypass engines which could not be located in the rear fuselage to replace the third engine became a problem. Another problem was the cockpit of the B727 which had a three-man crew while the modern jet has a two-man crew. It nevertheless still ranks among the best-selling aircraft.

These are the five best-selling aircraft of all time. The reason they are leading is based on attending to customer needs. These needs range from safety to economy to range and capacity. Affordability is also thrown in the mix. One cannot also forget customer comfort.
